University of Arizona Police provide 24 hour security for the MGIO Base Camp and the Mt. Graham International Observatory site. Each of the four team members are referred to as "Star" units on MGIO radio frequencies. The three canines and their handlers are certified annually by the NPCA for patrol and tracking. UAPD also provides EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) services. The officers are further trained in Wilderness Advanced First Aid, and Wild Land Fire Suppression Services.
